My Mouth Is Hanging Open

After one of my worst night's in a while (this bug is not going away), I woke up this morning to watch my TiVo'd Fox News Sunday. I'm fast forwarding the commercials when I see something quickly flash by that looked like the cover of "The Third Terrorist" book. But it wasn't. It was for a book called "Jerusalem Countdown." As I watch the commercial, I hear about it being a warning of a nuclear showdown between Iran and Israel. Then the kicker.. "This is a wake-up call for Christians to stand in absolute solidarity with Israel." While I realize people feel this way, it was a shock to my half-awake ears to hear it in a voice-over like that on a commerical. Had to hit pause and run to my computer to quickly blog about it while it was fresh in my head! Has anyone else seen this ad or this book? Wild.

I've heard Hagee's name, but had to look him up because, though I'm a Christian, I'm not into Apocalyptic novels. Some of his books seems to fall into that category.

This will interest you, Esther...

From this source:

Dr. Hagee has been to Israel 22 times and has met with every Prime Minister since Menechim Begin. John Hagee Ministries has given more than $8.5 million to bring Soviet Jews from the former Soviet Union to Israel. Dr. Hagee is also the Founder and Executive Director of “A NIGHT TO HONOR ISRAEL” an event which expresses solidarity between Christians and Jews on behalf of Jerusalem, the State of Israel and the United States.

Hagee is an evangelical Christian and pastors a huge church in San Antonio, Texas. Some of his books have been huge bestsellers, and most were written prior to 9/11. Not the one you saw advertised, though; it's his most recent one. I'm not sure if Countdown is fiction or nonfiction.

Get well, Esther!

I had to google it. I have no clue.

Refuah shelamah. If the bug isn't going away see the doc. You may have gone from virus to bacterial infection.

Think chicken soup with tons of garlic.

Interesting stuff, AOW! Thanks for sharing that. That stuff seems so odd to me, the whole doomsday contingent. I know they sell lots of books but still.

RA, I think I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. Much appreciated.

Uh....Bruce. You lost me at the first paragraph when you asked me to ask a question of people supposedly blown to bits. How does one get an answer? Hmm.... Have you ever heard that less is more? I would have deleted it (just cause of sheer length and babble) but thought it might amuse some of the readers here.

Some of the more extreme evangelical Christians believe that we are heading for the end times. They view Israel as a means to hasten the second coming of Christ.

This may sound odd but Evangelical types like Zola Levitt are our natural allies. The question of is Norman Finklestein, Chomsky, Zinn and Koevell being given a free pass due to their etnicity is relevant. One is far more likely to hear genuine anti semitism from the far left then a David Duke type.

Speaking of leftwing anti semites the blog of 167 is kaput. Most blogs leave a forwarding adress and keep their archives but 167 deleted his. Sadly, 167 only got genuine ratings when I whacked him.
When he banned dissent his readership went into the toilet.

As for your cold try the chilli powder as it opens up passages but the ultimate cure is sleep. I was out like a light for about six hours this afternoon and feel great. I have to get up late tommorow as my car is going in for an oil change so I am preparing a series of posts.

Esther,
I am glad you didn't delete Bruce786's comment - it is hillarious.

A very confused individual. ;-)
Look after yourself Esther.
I hope you'll get better soon.

Esther,
It's interesting that you brought up John Hagee because he was just on a radio program that was broadcast on C-Span yesterday. As I'm sure you could tell, he's unabashedly pro-Israel, although I don't know whether he went into the theological reasons for his support in the Fox interview. It's based on a fundamentalist interpretation of biblical prophecy, which means that he sees the establishment of the State of Israel as a pre-cursor to the second coming, as Seawitch has said. But that will only come after a horrific battle which will be fought in the Israeli city of Megiddo...or Armageddon as it's more commonly known. I'll leave the rest of the details for somebody else to fill in, but here's the thing. Dr. Hagee, and others like him, are quite influential and their followers aren't afraid to make their opinions known to the administration when it comes to Middle East policy and especially if they think Israel is being screwed. Also, as AOW pointed out, they've raised large sums of money to help rescue Jews from the Soviet Union. Again, that's part of the biblical prophesy because when all the Jews have returned to Israel, then the process can begin. Of course, some of us may be uncomfortable with much of this, but the question becomes do you look a gift horse in the mouth, especially since, as Beaker points out, these days the damage to Israel comes from Jews on the extreme left, not Christians on the religious right (the foolish statement by Pat Robertson, notwithstanding). And that's probably why, as far as the Israelis are concerned, many of them feel they can work with the Evangelicals without necessarily having to accept their theology. Also, because the majority of Israelis aren't religious to begin with, as long as the Evangelicals don't require a quid pro quo in regard to their beliefs, there would be no reason not to accept their political support and many of Israel's political leaders have made no bones about the fact that they're very grateful for it.

Bruce,
I'm sorry I can't go over your comments point by point, but I'm an atheist, so this is not my area of expertise. But, unless you mean something other than what we think of as Islam, I'm not sure why you said that "Islam is the oldest faith on the planet" when it's been around for less than 2,000 years and so it's pre-dated by both Judaism and Christianity, not to mention the Eastern religions.

Esther, take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon.

Esther, you're still sick? Maybe you need your grandpa to come over and read you the Princess Bride... (sorry, it's one of my fave movies. Didn't actually like the real book so much.)

And the comment from the spam bot was classic. I think he's headed for a PhD somewhere.

Feel better...

Dispensationalist theology states that because the Jews rejected Jesus as Messiah the first time he came around, the next time he comes around he's going to be the ass-kickin, name-takin liberator / conqueror Jews expect the Messiah to be. Oh, and lots of Jews will die needlessly to make the point.

I am very uncomfortable indeed with any sort of alliance between Israel and all those who wish her well with any person or group who verges on the irrational or fundamentalist.

It may be expedient in passing, but the long-term payment will be long and expensive.

Developing rational alliances with truly understanding and friendly nations is the only way to go.

Israel has the right to exist. Finish.

Get well, Esther - you poor bunny! Virtual chicken soup (with plenty lokshen) coming your way. Take care!

Esther, forget the damned chicken soup. Bourbon is the answer. Straight up. ;)

Esther,

This Bruce786 fellow has been answered at Infidel Bloggers Alliance with references from the Old Testament that refutes everything he says. He has been going to a lot of conservative sites putting the same argument over and over. See the post on how believers should respond to Islamic end times.

Esther,

I hope you won't find it too amazing that a lot of Christians support and care deeply for Israel. We would be meshugenah not too.

I want to let you know it's because we do care about Israel and the Jewish people. I don't know if you ever listen to Michael Medved or Dennis Prager but they seem to understand that there is a deeper relationship between us. We may not agree but we aren't blowing each other up either.

Glad you're feeling better. I haven't seen the ad, but consider myself one of those Christians standing with Israel.

BTW what is up with Bruce 786? Oh, Margaret!

Hope you feel better soon, Esther! You could also try gin; it was a cough medicine originally, anyway!

I think it would be a mistake to turn any ally away through mistrust-provided that ally isn`t a complete loon or jackal. Many Christians bear much goodwill for Israel, and I am certain it is possible to find a few pro-Israel Moslems out there (they keep quiet out of fear). As pointed out by Ben Franklin, ``We must all hang together or we shall surely all hang seperately``.

Speaking of loons and jackals, where did you dig up that Bruce fellow?

Esther - it is not possible for a christian who has understood ANY of Gods design and purpose to look upon Israel and the Jews with anything other than love and a commitment to her, Bruce 786 not-withstanding!!! LOL, thanks for leaving that rant there - it made me feel so......normal!!! Tee hee!
