This Makes Me Very Sad

While I've had a love/hate relationship with the political show, The West Wing, I've always loved John Spencer as Leo McGarry, the former Chief-of-Staff to President Bartlett (Martin Sheen) and current Vice Presidential candidate (alongside Spencer's former L.A. Law co-star, Jimmy Smits).

John Spencer passed away today in an L.A. hospital of a heart attack. His character had a heart attack on the show in a past season, and it was incredibly horrifying to watch (that's what a great actor the Emmy winner was). I can't even imagine what it was like for him to play it out for real. My condolences to the cast, his friends and family. He was only 58 years old.

I can't say that I have ever wathced the show but it is very sad when someone passes away.

Last year my art teacher passed away at the age of 55 from a heart attack and yesterday a man I used to know died at the age of 23 but in times like these I always take comfort in the Bible particluarly John 14.

That's too close for comfort.

I liked John Spencer on L.A. Law. Back then, I watched more TV. Now I watch the blogs. LOL.

That's the show where Democrats in the White House can cure global problems in a hour or less written by the guy whacked out on mushrooms, right?

I hear ya, AOW. Blogs beat TV most of the time these days.

Beamish, lol, that's pretty much it except that they squeezed out the shrooms fella.

Totally real, Rory. That heart attack scene freaked out me and the bf. We'd seen the commercial for it, so when he walked into a scene, bf was like, "Oh no, that's the heart attack suit," so we knew it was going to happen shortly. It was so terrifying. And that one was just acting. :(

It's a reminder that there are real people playing the roles. Make believe can only go so far.
Sorry.

They squeezed out the shrooms fella? Bummer.

This would have been my favorite episode.

Damn! This is the first I've heard of his death. I have never watched The West Wing but he was a fine actor who appeared in many other shows as well.

A sad day.

Bozwell,
Yes, John Spencer was a fine actor, often supporting, so lots of people didn't know his name until West Wing and the Emmy came along.

Esther,
Beak has an article up about Communism in Hollywood. I had a faint recollection about Elia Kazan and Bogie. Maybe you--or someone else here--has the straight of my recollection.
