Not Pleased With Condi
UPDATE:
Hat tip to AOW. Apparently, the quote was fabricated. Check it out here.
****************************
Hat tip to my pal Renee. Haaretz has an article with the following...
"Everyone empathizes with what the Israelis are facing," Rice said, but added "It cannot be Gaza only."
How about it can't be just the Israelis suffering and making concessions? How about it can't be only the Israelis who are acting for the good of peace? How about it can't only be the Palestinians who are safe to walk the streets and go out to eat?
Pu-leez.

damn straight esther! for the record, i have not like Rice too much either.
Remember that Condi played the dhimmi in the flush-the-Koran scandal. Called the Koran their "holy book," but I bet you won't hear her say "Holy Bible" or "Holy Torah." [Do I have that last term correct? This Gentile is going out on a limb again.]
I'd like a little respect for those last two, but Condi was all about respecting the Koran. I wrote about that Koran-flushing and send a letter to GWB and to Condi @

Also, I've noticed that many newspapers and news magazines captalize Koran but not Bible, or capitalize Koranic but not Biblical.
AOW:
we Jews refer to it as the Torah (some other terms are Tanach and Chumash- these are in book form, unlike the scroll). also the Old Testament works also. pick your poison.
"Also, I've noticed that many newspapers and news magazines captalize Koran but not Bible, or capitalize Koranic but not Biblical."
very interesting. i am not as observant so i probably missed it. i'll be on the lookout in the future.
I thought we Jews didn't refer to it as the Old Testament because that implies you can "update" G-d's word?
Unfortunately, Condi Rice now represents the State Department which, in addition to Robert Novak (why the hell isn't he in jail?)and Pat Buchanan, are probably the worst enemies Israel has in this country. In fact, it was reported recently that in a meeting Condi had with some Israeli officials, she insisted (among other things) that they provide weapons to the Palestinian Authority and when the Israelis refused, she was said to have nearly became apoplectic. But I think the time has come for the U.S. and the Europeans to stop strong-arming Israel and to start ratcheting up the pressure on the real enemies of peace.
Esther, you're probably right about the term "Old Testament" and I think the other reason Jews don't use it is because it would support a form of what's known as replacement theology that says the Old Testament has been superceded by the New Testament.
I can't stand Rice. I've no kind thoughts about her at all. She disgusts me.
I went to a wedding yesterday, followed by a trip to the Kotel witht he people who were giving me a ride back home. Soon after we finished davening...this was about 11 pm. we heard singing and clapping..lots of noise, and curious we went to see what was happening on the plaza.
It turns out that there was one community from the Gush who had been evacuated and were being brought to the Kotel as they decided to live there, up in the courtyard...So many people came, bringing the supplies they would need, food, drink, bedding. It was a marvel.
The people arrived and we greeted them with somg...they were not broken people! I find this so uplifiting. They were not bowed down, but full of vitality.
Someday the Gush will be ours again.
Right now I think we need to understand that G-d has a plan, what it is I don't know, and I hope the joy will come soon...But stay with the faith that G-d loves us, and cherishes us, and is caring for us right now.
We refer to the Bible or Tanach, there's no updated version.
Bush and Rice have been very open and blunt about how they plan on mutilating Israel (until it's indefensible.)

I didn't mean to start a debate on terminology. BTW, Christians have many names for the Bible as well. It's a huge list, and the terminology depends on denominational affiliation; many editions say "holy" on the cover. But I've never heard the adjective used when speaking of it. That's one reason I got upset when Condi used the adjective to refer to the Koran. She sounded like a sycophant. Just FYI.
Rachel Ann,
I'm glad to hear that their spirits aren't broken. Haven't seen this type of story on the news.
esther:
i have heard it referred to as the Old Testament. i am a traditional (slightly above conservative, but below orthodoxy). we call it all of that, but Torah dominates.
Exactly Rory. I know non-Jews call it that, which is fine. I just didn't think Jews were supposed to call it that.
Rachel Ann -- thank you so much for sharing that!
Everyone, if you want to know what's going on from the Israelis themselves, I highly recommend you visit Rachel Ann's and Muse's Web sites. They are fantastic!
AOW, please start debates here any time you want! I love them! :)
DM, I was raised reform though I used to go to a conservative month-long summer camp (well, twice). I just picked that up along my travels.
I used to admire Rice but in the last few weeks, I have changed my mind. The people she should be applying pressure on is the PA.
I was disgusted with her remarks yesterday.
Bush, Rice, and others in the Administration have been falling all over themselves pandering to Muslims in lots of ways. That should stop because it isn't going to accomplish anything positive. You can give as much as you want, and it will never be enough.
Esther - I refer to it as the "Old Testament" when speaking to gentiles in order to differentiate.
When writing, I refer to it as the Torah.
Chumash is not the entire Torah, it is the first five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
The Torah encomapsses Chumash as well as the rest of the "Old Testament":

However, I have also heard just the Five Books of Moses (also known as The Pentateuch,
the Books of the Law, the Law)
also referred to as the Torah:

Confusing, isn't it? This is a classic example of why Judaism is so appealing to me - ask five Jews a question and you'll get eight opinions!
Gaza LAST. That will be the last disengagement the Palestinians (and Condi) can expect to see from Israel, and rightfully so.
Me too, seawitch.
Gindy, read your link... if that info is correct...oy. Not good.
Tom, you are SO RIGHT!!!
Thanks for the links, Mark!
Jonathan...I hope you're right....
Here's a thought - How many of you (American Jews) make a point of using BCE instead of BC when referring to events prior to the start of the Gregorian Calendar?
So I guess there will be a flood of Rice's critics stepping all over themselves to own up to being duped and recanting their remarks, right? Hello???
The silence is deafening.
I'm not anonymous!!!
BTW - Good on you, Esther, for posting that update!!!
The Jerusalem Post had the full text a couple of days ago. I am glad to see others are posting the correction also.
The damn media is so often full of lies. (Here's a funny: at first I had this typo--"full of flies.") On second thought, the media IS full of flies.
LOL, Mark. And thanks Seawitch. I have been in a communications HOLE the last few days! Darn job has had weird wireless the last few days and hasn't allowed my personal computer to get access.... totally cramped my bloggin' style! ;)
LOL AOW. We commented at the same time. :)
you know what, i am not surprised that the NY Times did it again.
Actually, I think that Rice and Bush are in many ways being politically saavy. They say things that are aimed at making the Theocrats happy, but in the end, the actions are not so much so.
And I'm glad this was fabricated. I wouldn't believe she would say something like this.
