And So It Ends...
Peter Jennings has passed away at 67 from lung cancer. He announced he had it not long ago... in April. You can read about it here. At least he didn't suffer for too long.

I always liked Peter Jennings. I am sorry to see him go and but like you stated, at least he didn't suffer long.
The career of Peter Jennings illustrates that hard work pays off, even without proper education and all kinds of qualifications certificates.
While I'm a strong supporter of education (I'm a teacher, after all!), sometimes qualified people don't get the job done. Others, like Jennings, get the job done without qualifications. He was a "natural," I believe. We need to have more appreciation of "naturals"; they exist in every field.
I didn't always agree with Jennings's commentary, but I'm sorry that he's gone. He was an inspiration to those who appreciate an energetic work-ethic.
And I loved his touch of Canadian accent!
Gindy, what seems to happen is that many cancers go undetected for long periods of time because there are often no overt symptoms. In Peter Jennings' case, I suspect that by the time he sought treatment, apparently for the persistent hoarseness, the cancer had progressed significantly. Also, it seems he had a form of lung cancer that's even more lethal than most. So, while it often appears that people die fairly soon after being diagnosed, the cancer has usually been there for quite some time.
Exactly Rory. Many cancers, by the time you become symptomatic and therefore discover it, it's too late.

Upon some reflection, it occurs to me that my previous remark was callous in the extreme, and completely out of line given the circumstances. We are not responsible for what we think, but we are responsible for what we say and do. My comment was disrespectful of the memory of Peter Jennings, his family, and those who commented here that obviously felt some affinity for the man. I hereby submit my full apologies to anyone that I may have offended. I can only hope that said apology will be accepted by all.

I haven't had time to respond but I was going to tell you that I pretty much agreed. I feel badly he's passed away; no one deserves to die that way -- BUT I wasn't fond of his anti-Israel stance or the way it infected the way ABC covered the Middle East.
