Hollywood Hypocrites

Hollywood isn't happy unless it has a cause. A favorite over the years has been human rights. Remember the song, "Ain't Gonna Play Sun City" to bring attention to Apartheid in South Africa? I wonder if that would have happened if South Africa had been looking to get into the movie business.

Well, guess who is?! Looks like the big Hollywood Studios are falling all over themselves in a race to set up shop in....

China! Can you believe it? Because we know how great China treats its people and what a swell government they have! Studios are planning to invest $150 million over the next few years. Who are the "they" I'm speaking of? Sony's Columbia Tristar Pictures unit, Time Warner's Warner Brothers, Merchant Ivory Productions... hell even Harvey Weinstein is planning on producing films in China. But they're not the only ones -- looks like America's sweetheart, Walt Disney Pictures, is planning on shooting a live-action martial-arts remake of Snow White over there.

Am I the only one who thinks something's wrong with this picture?

Somebody once said "money is the best deodorant" and, apparently, in Hollywood, those are words to live by.

It all comes down to money. Any and all of these Hollywood types, from producers down to those who suck the tit of the movie industry (like some guys I have worked with who also work on sets for Lucas) find ways to justify their hypocrisy when it comes time to make some Hollywood green. It is really disgusting to see. And we're still waiting for one of the Baldwins to move the hell out of the US. Almost five years and counting.....

Hey Mark,

Stephen can stay, but I want Alec to live by his word and leave!

You`re right; Hollywood is rotten to the core.

By all means, Hollywood, support the oppressive regime in China and funnel your dollars into that nation. Are some of you humanitarians going to make films in Iran too?
[sarcasm]

Oh, I don't know...Red China and Hollywood seem compatible to me.

"The fact is that our government and unions (state and local) make it so expensive to do business in the US that they will leave to places of the world where it is cheaper"

Gindy - The people I worked with that worked for Lucas were members of the stagehands unions. And very outspoken, liberally speaking. I guess now they'll find a way to justify this move by saying that they are supporting the poor oppresed Chinese workers or some such bullshit.

If you want a wonderful view on how important actors are to any cause, watch Team America, World Police.
